A prototypical interactive cartographic platform, to assess the viability and development options for over 2500 coal tip sites across the South Wales Valleys by analysing environmental, socio-economic, planning and regeneration criteria, alongside site-specific risks, constraints and opportunity metrics.
Developed through the Welsh Government's SBRI programme, the platform synthesises geospatial datasets across six thematic assessment frameworks, covering community and services, transport and mobility, infrastructure and energy, ecology and biodiversity, and environment and climate. Informed by stakeholder workshops with local and national representatives across the South Wales Valleys, the tool is designed to support evidence-based decision-making for the long-term regeneration of post-industrial coalfield communities.
